STATE SECRETS

Ministry of State Security

Central Prefecture, Eridu

Akkadian Empire

For the second time in a week, Citizen General Che Josza found himself facing the Minister of State Security. The report from Luyten’s Star had come in two hours ago. After reviewing it, he’d brought it to her attention personally.

“And there is no way that the explosion can be traced back to Akkadia?” Rin Zhou’s question hung between them as she stared at the feed’s final image, the debris field that was once deGrasse frozen in midair.

He shook his head. “Impossible to completely rule that out, but our agent believes it’ll take some time before the Alliance will be able to mount any sort of investigation into it.”

Rin Zhou nodded thoughtfully. “That same agent is on her way back to us, with the samples?”

“And with Janus, as well. They departed for the gate just prior to the evacuation,” he said.

Rin Zhou tapped her stylus lightly against her desk. “Janus.” She drew the word out, tone contemplative.

“One of our Geminate-born and -raised assets. A biochemist. We arranged matters so that he would be selected for the deGrasse team early on.” Che allowed distaste to cross his features. “Our agent reports Janus is slipping his leash.”

“How so?”

Che really wished he did not have to tell her this. But it would not go well for him if others brought this to her attention. No, he needed to own up to this.

“He killed without authorization,” he said, “and in a manner that could have garnered unwanted attention, had our agent not cleaned up after him.”

Rin Zhou shot him a sharp glance. “He was trained with the Junxun, was he not?” Her words held an edge to them.

Che inclined his head. “Janus was born on Ceriba, in Procyon. As with all of our sleeper agents embedded within Geminate space, we had to limit his visit to months and not years, lest we raise suspicions. He came here for training at an early age, and returned for periodic reconditioning under the guise of visiting relatives.”

“His conditioning is failing.”

Che dipped his head lower, accepting the rebuke.

“Janus is a true sociopath. He requires stringent controls to keep his…proclivities in check.” Che straightened, meeting her gaze once more. “We have assigned one of the assassins to him as a control.”

“We do not suffer ineptitude. Get rid of him.” Rin Zhou’s voice was implacable.

“With respect, minister, we cannot. He is our only asset in Alliance space who understands what the scientists in Luyten’s Star have found.”

He lifted his gaze once more, spreading his hands in a gesture of supplication. “We need him, if not to bring our own scientists up to speed, then to continue to interface with Alliance experts and bring us more intelligence on what they have discovered.”

Rin Zhou stared at Che for a long moment, saying nothing. He resisted the urge to shift uncomfortably under her regard.

“Very well,” she said finally. “Tell our agent that he is to be reminded of his place and to whom he owes his allegiance.”

Che bowed yet again.
